What is PAP therapy?

When diagnosing sleep apnoea, your doctor will consider the results of your sleep examination to determine the most appropriate treatment. The severity and occurrence of the symptoms are important in determining the correct therapy.

You have been prescribed PAP therapy and it is important to follow this through to help avoid further complications and risks to your health

Positive Airway Pressure therapy provides you with a device that draws in ambient air and blows it into your airway.

In addition to the prescribed therapy, you can also reduce your symptoms by making lifestyle changes such as:

  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Strive for a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Drink coffee, black tea and other caffeinated drinks in moderation and avoid them in the evening
  • Maintain fixed sleep times
  • Set up your bedroom for rest - for example, avoid going to sleep with the TV on, try to maintain a cool temperature
  • Do not use your smartphone or tablet (screens) before sleeping
